Trader Interview Questions

Trader interviews test how fast and how soundly you reason about uncertainty: probability and expected value, quick mental arithmetic, and market-making games where you quote a price and manage the risk you take on.

Trading interviews are less about what you know than how you decide. Expect probability and expected-value problems posed as dice, coins, cards or bets; fast arithmetic woven into larger questions; and quoting games where you post a two-sided market and update as information arrives.

Most processes open with a timed numerical screen before anyone speaks to you, so arithmetic speed is a prerequisite rather than a differentiator. The later rounds are where judgement is assessed: how you size risk, how you handle being picked off, and whether you can explain your reasoning while under time pressure.

Frequently asked questions

What do trader interviews actually test?
Probability, expected value, fast mental arithmetic, and trading judgement - usually through betting games and two-sided quoting rather than formal questions. Interviewers care about your reasoning as much as your final number.
Do I need a finance degree to interview for a trading role?
Usually not. Most desks test probabilistic reasoning and decision-making rather than finance knowledge, so backgrounds in maths, physics, computer science and engineering are common.
How do I prepare for the numerical screen?
Practise no-calculator arithmetic under a timer until it is automatic. It is a pure skill and it responds quickly to daily reps - and clearing it is what unlocks the rest of the process.
