The missing dollar

MediumBrainteasers~5m

Three guests pay $30 for a room ($10 each). The clerk realizes it costs $25 and sends $5 back with the bellhop, who pockets $2 and returns $1 to each guest. Now each guest paid $9, totaling $27, plus the bellhop's $2 makes $29 - so where did the missing $1 go?

Show hints (2)+
  1. Should you be adding the bellhop's $2 to the $27, or subtracting it?
  2. The $27 the guests paid splits into $25 + $2 - don't add the $2 twice.
