Optimal quote width

You set a half-spread ss (in dollars, 0≤s≤40 \le s \le 4). Wider quotes earn more per fill but scare off flow: the probability a given quote fills is (1−s4)\left(1 - \dfrac{s}{4}\right), and each fill earns you exactly ss. Choose ss to maximize your expected capture per quote (fill probability times profit-per-fill). What half-spread ss (in dollars) is optimal?

Show hints (2)+
  1. Expected capture =(1−s/4)⋅s= (1 - s/4)\cdot s - maximize this in ss.
  2. It's a downward parabola s−s2/4s - s^2/4; its peak is at s=2s = 2.
