Two Newton iterations for a square root

Newton's method solves f(x)=0f(x)=0 via xk+1=xk−f(xk)f′(xk)x_{k+1} = x_k - \dfrac{f(x_k)}{f'(x_k)}. To approximate 2\sqrt{2}, apply it to f(x)=x2−2f(x) = x^2 - 2 starting from x0=1x_0 = 1. What is x2x_2 (the estimate after two iterations)? Give a decimal to four places.

Show hints (2)+
  1. For f=x2−2f=x^2-2 the update simplifies to xk+1=xk/2+1/xkx_{k+1} = x_k/2 + 1/x_k.
  2. x0=1→x1=3/2→x2=17/12x_0=1 \to x_1 = 3/2 \to x_2 = 17/12.
