The two-envelopes paradox

Two envelopes contain money, one twice the other. You open yours and see XX. The "switch" argument says the other envelope holds 12X\tfrac12 X or 2X2X, each with probability 12\tfrac12, for an expected 54X>X\tfrac54 X > X - so you should always switch. Where does this reasoning break down?

Show hints (2)+
  1. Ask what prior over amounts would justify the 12/12\tfrac12 / \tfrac12 split at every XX.
  2. No proper distribution is flat over an unbounded range.

The 12/12\tfrac12 / \tfrac12 split cannot hold for all XX under any proper prior, so the 54\tfrac54 edge is illusory.
