Quant hiring is more open to non-target candidates than most of finance, for a structural reason: a large part of the funnel is a scored test, and a scored test does not know where you went to university.
That is not the same as saying it is easy. But it does tell you where to spend effort.
The screen is your friend
If a process opens with a timed arithmetic, probability or coding assessment, that stage is pure output. Candidates from well-connected backgrounds get no advantage there at all.
This is the opposite of a networking-driven process, and it means preparation converts directly into progress. Get very good at timed mental math and probability, because that is the gate you can force.
Build legible evidence
Where a target-school CV carries an implicit signal, you need an explicit one. The things that read clearly to a quant recruiter:
- Competitive mathematics or programming results, at any level.
- A real project with a result you can defend - a model, a simulation, a piece of analysis with data behind it.
- Serious play in a strategy game. Several firms are explicit that games proxy decision-making under uncertainty.
- Demonstrable coding, ideally something someone else has used.
Note what is absent: society positions and generic internships. They are not negative, they are just not evidence of the thing being hired for.
Apply early and widely
Quant timelines run ahead of general graduate recruitment, often by months, and many programmes are eligibility-restricted to penultimate or final year students. Missing a window costs a full year. Check the specific requirements per firm rather than assuming a common calendar.
Apply broadly. The variance in any single process is high, and the marginal application is cheap once you have prepared.
Where not to spend effort
Polishing a CV past the point of clarity. For a process gated by a scored assessment, the CV mostly needs to not disqualify you.
Networking as a substitute for preparation. It can get an application read; it will not get you through a timed test.
